Maldives Fire Tragedy Male, Nov 10: The Maldivian fire service said that at least 10 people, including nine Indians, died and several others were hurt when a fire broke out in the cramped homes of foreign workers in Male.
Local media said that 10 bodies were found on the second floor of a building that was destroyed by a fire that started in a car repair shop on the first floor.
He also said that they put out the fire in about four hours. As part of a campaign against encroachment in Maharashtra, illegal structures built near Afzal Khan’s tomb in Satara were torn down.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in Male which has caused loss of lives, including reportedly of Indian nationals. We are in close contact with the Maldivian authorities,” the Indian High Commission in Male tweeted.

An evacuation center has been set up in a nearby stadium, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Maldives said.
“NDMA has established an evacuation center in Maafannu Stadium for those displaced and affected by the fire in Male. Arrangements are being made to provide relief assistance and support.”
The Maldivian capital is one of the most crowded cities in the world. It is best known as a high-end tourist spot.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, when the infection spread three times faster among foreign workers than among locals, it became clear that their living conditions were not good.
About 29,000 Indians live and work in the Maldives, and almost 22,000 of them live in Male, the capital city.
They are made up of professionals like nurses, teachers, managers, doctors, engineers, accountants, and others.
